KOŚCIELISKO in the 17th century was not a village, it was a separate country. Hershaft Kościelisko – this name described a large part of the Zakopanian lands which included the Old Kościelska and most of the wooden areas of what was to become a village in the later period of time. First settlers inhabited the grasslands belonging to several different villages and spreading along the southern slope of the Gubałówka range.

Hence the original name of the village – Polany (the grasslands). The legend by old people has it that when King Jan Kazimierz, who was retreating from the overpowering Swedish army and planed to move to Hungary, used the wide pathway leading along Palenica, the Butorów Wierch Hill, POLANA BUDZÓWKA (one of the oldest grasslands of Kościelisko), Kościeliska Valley, Kraków canyon, and further down into Slovakia.

One of the remainders of those past times is Królewska Street (translated as the King’s way) in which our ‘Pod Orłem’ Villa is located and welcomes Guests from all parts of Poland and from all over the world.
